Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) Temple

The spiritual heart of Kolhapur and one of the six Shakti Peethas of India, dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi. Built by the Chalukya rulers around the 7th century in black-stone hemadpanti architecture, its finely carved walls and gilded shikhara draw pilgrims from across the country. It's famous for Kiranotsav — three days each in January and November when the setting sun's rays fall directly on the deity.

Rankala Lake

Kolhapur's favourite evening spot, formed centuries ago from an old stone quarry and ringed by landscaped promenades, the Sandhya Math and Shalini Palace. Locals gather at dusk for pedal-boat and horse-cart rides, sunsets over the water, and the famous street food along the Padpath — a calm, family-friendly break from the city bustle.

About 20 km from the city, Panhala is one of the largest and most historic hill forts in the Deccan, closely tied to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the legendary defence at Pavankhind. Sprawling ramparts, the Teen Darwaza gateway, Sajja Kothi and the great granaries sit amid rolling hills that turn emerald in the monsoon — a favourite weekend day trip with valley views.

Bhavani Mandap

A grand old gateway and durbar hall in the heart of the old city, Bhavani Mandap was part of the Chhatrapati's palace complex and houses a Tulja Bhavani shrine. Its imposing stone façade, wooden halls and the bustling markets around it make it a living slice of Kolhapur's royal history — and a great starting point to explore the old town.

Khasbag Maidan

Kolhapur is India's home of kushti (traditional wrestling), and the Rajarshi Shahu Khasbag Maidan is its cathedral — a historic open-air amphitheatre that seats tens of thousands around a central red-earth pit. On match days the roar of the crowd and the clash of pehelwans is an only-in-Kolhapur experience.
